Definition of cooperatives:

They are business-specific projects that balance two main objectives: meeting members' needs and seeking profit and sustainability. Cooperatives can be registered cooperatives, producer organizations, self-help groups, producer associations, associations or agricultural chambers.

Cooperatives exist in all countries and in all sectors: agriculture, credit, food, finance, health care, insurance and marketing. It is estimated that one billion people fall under the banner of cooperatives in the world, providing about 100 million more jobs than the multinationals by about 20 per cent.This figure includes the members of the cooperatives themselves, as well as workers in companies that provide goods and services to these cooperatives.

These resources help them increase food production, market their products and create new jobs and in this way they can improve their livelihoods and increase food security in their communities and the world at large.

Research shows that small-scale individual farmers do not benefit much from higher food prices, while farmers who work collectively in strong producer organizations and cooperatives are better able to take advantage of market opportunities.

Members of cooperatives working in agriculture, forestry, fishing and livestock breeding are involved in production, profit-sharing, cost-saving, risk-sharing and income-generating activities, and gain greater bargaining power in the market as both buyers and sellers.

Another significant contribution of cooperatives and producer organizations is their ability to help small farmers communicate their concerns to stakeholders and ultimately increase their bargaining power and influence policy.
Cooperatives have been dubbed the “social conscience business model”

Malnutrition takes three forms:

Improper feeding:

This means not getting the right amount of essential nutrients such as protein, calories, and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), weakening the body and characterized by frequent infection and disease, and as a result of the loss of proper nutrition, many people die from common diseases such as measles or diarrhea.
Malnutrition is not measured by the amount of food eaten, but by physical measurements of the body such as weight, height, age and laboratory analysis of blood.


This term is used to describe the condition of people who do not have enough calories to meet the minimum physiological needs for an active life. There are currently 1.02 billion undernourished people around the world, mostly from developing countries.

Unbalanced Nutrition:

Nutrition is where certain types of nutrients are eaten more than others such as starches or fats, with chronic diseases such as obesity and heart disease.

What are the effects of malnutrition?

Malnutrition causes a number of problems such as extreme thinness, or very short stature compared to a person's age, or lack of vitamins and minerals such as iron deficiency that causes anemia, or overweight obesity.

Micronutrient deficiencies (vitamins and minerals) are extremely important as nearly two billion people worldwide suffer. According to the World Health Organization, iron deficiency, vitamin A and zinc are among the top 10 leading causes of death through disease in developing countries.

Iron deficiency is the most common form of malnutrition, affecting billions of people around the world. It also affects state productivity and hinders cognitive growth. Vitamin A deficiency is a leading cause of blindness for children in developing countries and millions of children are born with intellectual disabilities because their mothers do not consume enough iodine during pregnancy. Zinc deficiency contributes to stopping growth and weakening immunity in young children, leading to hundreds of children dying each year.


The continuation of the rise in the prices of most basic commodities on which the family depends, we must think about radical solutions so that this rise does not affect the health of individuals, and therefore the public health of families whose income does not keep pace with the high prices, and this global crisis may be an opportunity for good changes. Nutrition scientists need to improve the lifestyle and consumption, and the current situation is the best time to take advantage of this crisis to solve our health problems, and to make some positive points.
